Katy Perry's Sesame Street segment pulled because of her cleavage
Katy Perry's appearance on the long-running PBS children's show has been pulled after parents complained about the singer's cleavage-bearing dress. Are you freakin’ kidding me?
A clip leaked on the web this week (nearly a million people have viewed it on YouTube), showing Perry, 25, in a low-cut dress and veil, performing a kid-friendly version of her hit "Hot N Cold" with Elmo.*gasp*
Like kids today haven’t seen cleavage. Honestly. My kid’s seen me about fall out of a shirt. She’s even stuck her hands down my shirt (she got reprimanded for that one real quick). So to think our kids have made it to the age when they can watch Sesame Street without having seen cleavage is asinine. What is the worst that’s going to happen? She points to the screen and says, “Booby.” Woohoo. There are so many worse things she can do. People need to grow up.
TMZ reports that parents quickly fired off angry letters, demanding it not to be broadcast. "They're gonna have to rename it cleavage avenue," complained one.Really? Cleavage Avenue? That’s the best they could come up with? How about Booby Blvd? Or Cleavage Crescent? Or Ta-ta Terrace? Come on, let’s at least let the angry letters ooze creativity.
Some defended the clip. One commenter wrote: "If your kid is saying things like: boobs!..it’s because of the family not because of Katy! I mean the family is the one who educate the kids! No one else is responsible of that!"Exactly. And I mean shoot, I taught Jocelyn the word “Booby.” My friend wanted her kid’s first word to be “booby.” (Didn’t work out that way.) It’s all a matter of how you parent, and whether you treat it like taboo. But I don’t see how seeing someone on TV in a low-cut, cleavage-baring dress will have any sort of adverse effect on your child’s development. If you don’t want them to see that kind of thing, then you best not let them watch TV, period. Or you getting dressed up to go out on a date. Or have your kid catch you getting dressed (which happens). Seriously people. Do you have nothing better to do? Are you that excommunicated from your child’s teachings that you can’t teach them about this, you have to expect Sesame Street to deny Katy Perry being herself (have you seen some of the other stuff she’s worn?) with Elmo because you can’t parent?
But a Sesame Street spokesperson issued a statement to UsMagazine.com early Thursday morning, deciding to side with the angry viewers: "Sesame Street has a long history of working with celebrities across all genres, including athletes, actors, musicians and artists. Sesame Street has always been written on two levels, for the child and adult. We use parodies and celebrity segments to interest adults in the show because we know that a child learns best when co-viewing with a parent or care-giver. We also value our viewer’s opinions and particularly those of parents. In light of the feedback we’ve received on the Katy Perry music video which was released on You Tube only, we have decided we will not air the segment on the television broadcast of Sesame Street, which is aimed at preschoolers. Katy Perry fans will still be able to view the video on You Tube."I really think Sesame Street and PBS should have stood up for themselves and defended it, rather than giving in. Damned if you do, damned if you don’t … but seriously, I don’t see a problem here with forcing those offended to actually parent. Oh, for shame.
On Thursday morning, she simply Tweeted, "I can totally tell you how to get to Sesame Street! I've been, Elmo & I hang out."Umm, yeah, he stares at your cleavage too. (Seriously, look at that screen shot - where is he looking?) What little bit of it is there, I might add. I mean, really, people got that bent out of shape over some itty bitty titties. Puh-leeze.
