Videos Contributed by Matthew Slotkin -- Every Friday night at 10PM, the Nuyorican Poets CafĂ© on the Lower East Side hosts a poetry slam. In slams, poets are not narrators detached from their story – they are the main character at their most vulnerable, often exposing their deepest secrets and darkest thoughts, they do more than recite – they declaim, they do not just sing happy lyrics – they spit the truth: race, religion, politics, nothing is left untouched.
